Suspected burglar tells police he was checking property for suspicious people.
The man with the gloves on his hand and flashlight on his head told deputies he was just checking the darkened home for suspicious people and was not one himself, according to an arrest report.
But inside, a safe had been pried open and drawers had been yanked from the dresser, investigators wrote.
Deputies responded to 1401 Pass-a-Grille Way about 6 p.m. March 21. After they heard rustling upstairs, according to the report, they found Claribal Avillanedas Sorto, 49, of St. Pete Beach. They said he was wearing gloves and a headlamp. He told them he had been drinking Corona beers after performing maintenance in the area when he spotted an open window, deputies said. Sorto then went into the house to check for anything suspicious, according to the report.
He faces charges of burglary and possession of burglary tools.
