TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – An unidentified man attempted to flee a traffic stop early Monday, but failed when he was injured as he jumped 70 feet from an Interstate-4 overpass.
The incident occurred just after 2 a.m. near the East Columbus Drive and North 50th Street exit. The man suffered non-life-threatening injuries including a broken femur and wrist. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
According to a Tampa Police Department report, officers initially pulled the man over for speeding. After talking to him, a DUI investigator was called to the scene to evaluate the driver for impairment.
As the officers were conducting a field sobriety test the driver fled on foot. The officers chased the man as he ran along I-4 for a short distance before jumping from the overpass to a grassy median below.
Criminal charges against the unidentified man are pending as the investigation continues.
